Sheba Baby

It’s late at night. A loan company vice-president named Rick is closing up shop when some thugs come along and try to destroy the loan office. What the loan shark hooligans do not know is that the president of the loan company is still in the building! He try’s to stop the damage and attacks however he is triple teamed and left for dead. They messed with the wrong person! Rick sends an urgent telegram to his the presidents daughter Shieba, , a private investigator played by Pam Grier. When Sheba gets the telegram, she heads to the airport to look into what happened and who is behind the effort to close down her dad’s business in Louisville.

After arriving in Louisville, Sheba arrives at her dad’s home and finds him bruised and battered. He pleads with Shieba not to get evolved. The next day, Sheba arrives at her father’s office to borrow his car. The phone rings and it’s the loan shark who sent in his thugs the a couple of days before. When an agreement is made to meet to discuss selling the loan business, the loan shark reviles that an object was placed on his steering wheel and was set to explode ten seconds after the car was started. Dad races out the door with Rick and pulls Shieba out of the car just in time! Now Sheba is pissed and is going to make the loan sharks pay!



Sheba finds out that a deal involving the loan sharks is going down at midnight near the railroad tracks that evening. What a perfect opportunity for Shieba to catch the bad guys in the act and take them down! In past movies, Pam was allowed to shine in her role as an independent woman who can kick ass, take names and look damn sexy doing it. In “Sheba Baby“, Pam plays her role in the style of Angie Dickson’s 1970’s television cop show “Police Woman”. Her character is restrained and he sex appeal is played down compared to “Coffy” and “Foxy Brown”. There is far less violence in this movie than her other films.

The worst possible thing that could happen takes place the next day when several white men charge into the business and begin to shoot up the business. When stray bullets strike her father down that is all it takes for Sheba to loose it and start firing her gun and spill some white boys blood for hurting her father! It’s war!!!

The movie takes a turn toward the type of stories we are used to seeing Pam in at this point. Pam uses her sexy looks and dangerous weapons to rope in the bad guys and bring them down in cold blood. The pace of the movie is slow and the story could have been told in a sixty minute television cop show instead of a full feature length movie. Pretty weak. The trailer for the movie is better than the movie itself.

Foxy Brown

She is a one woman hit squad! Pam Grier is handed a much better script in Foxy Brown than she was Coffy. Coffy was dark and sexy but all of the actors and actresses overacted way too much. Foxy Brown is about a woman who is out for revenge on a female pimp for having her boyfriend, an ex-undercover drug agent, shot and killed. To get even, Foxy, played by Grier, knows her brother was the looser who blew the whistle on where to find her boyfriend and kill him. So Foxy goes after her brother to find out who he is working for and get revenge.

Foxy joins a call girl service to get on the inside and get information on those that killed her man. As it turns out, the judges in the community are on the take. The call girls service the judges in exchange for a good time and then the drug lords and the call girl agency are off the hook. Foxy is great at taking matters into her own hands and humiliates one of the judges she is to service by forcing him out the door and into the hotel hallway with nothing on but his shirt! Needless to say, he got what he deserved from a group of angry and offended women!




The violence in this movie is not nearly as strong or as gory as in Coffy. The acting and the story is much better as well. The funniest scene in the movie finds Coffy in the hospital room with her boyfriend. His entire face is bandaged up and Foxy and he decide this would be a great play to get down and get funky! The Aid walks in and catches them in the act and not only tells him that was a no-no, but slaps his you know what when she pulls off his gown to give him a bed bath. I guess he was making a point and she knocked it down. The nurse aid took a page out of Foxy's book. Great film Love it!

Coffy, she's a baaad motha!!!

The "Godmother" is pissed and nobody is safe from her! After Coffy's sister is drawn into a life of being a drug addict and dope pusher, Coffy sets out to destroy the people who destroyed her sis!

The movie starts out with a pusher in club being summined by his friend to come out to his car and check out the hot babe (Coffy) that says she is looking for some action. Once back at the hotel, Coffy (Pam Grier) seduces her new plaything then ask him to tuen out the light. When he turns around, he is greeted by Coffy holding a large shot gun. Without a second waisted, she blows his head clean off! Then she proceeds to back his friend into the bathroom where he falls backward into the tub. An angry Coffy then kills the man with an injection of some drug. I could not understand what it was.

Thoughout the rest of the film, this type of behavior is repeated over and over as one-by-one each member of the drug family are brought down. Coffy is shocked when the trail of dirty players leads to her lover who is also running for congress. Most of the money he uses for his campaign comes from the drug family.

Pam Grier looks sexy in this film but is the only star that "over acts" in her role. In an interview, Pam stated that all she wanted was to strive for an award for her acting in these types of films. However, there is a thing as trying too hard and that is what she does. In the real world, no man or woman would have gotten as close or as far as she did in the movie in taking down the bad guys.

The film is still fun and is recommended viewing for anyone new to blaxploitation.
