Attack of the Monsters 1969

Two boys who are supposed to be studying, instead spend time staying up late searching the stars looking for spaceships after scientist play a message recorded from aliens a million miles out in space. After seeing a flying saucer that night, the kids set out the next morning to find where the UFO may have landed. The kids park their bikes right outside of a wooded area and take a trail to and try to locate the ship.

Throwing caution to the wind, the kids enter the ship to check things out. Inside, the ship looks a lot like a bunch of set pieces from the original Star Trek episodes. Once the boys are aboard, the ship lifts off and carries the two boys to space. Gamera, the giant flying turtle, who happens to have rocket jet boosters for back feet, comes to the boys aid when a giant space rock almost smashes the ship. But does Gamera make the boys be good and go home? Of course not! Then we wouldn’t have the rest of the movie to enjoy! After a few more minutes of this intergalactic joy ride, Gamera panics, spins in circles and allows the remote controlled space ship to take the two boys away to a planet where aliens to eat kid’s brains. Well, I guess that’s what you get for trusting a giant turtle.

After landing on the planet, the two boys are eyewitness to a battle between what looks like a giant crawling, air breathing shark and a gold flying bird that looks suspiciously like a man dressed in a shiny suit. The boys try to hide in something that looks like a craft that the Apollo astronauts would have returned to earth in. Oddly enough, the two boys know how to operate it and hide themselves until the monsters go away. OK, this story is just getting stranger by the scene.

Once the monsters are gone, two cute Japanese gals show up in space outfits and sound a lot like the chipmunks on speed. The two ladies go on to explain what happened to their planet and how they control the laws of nature. The boys have no clue that the gals are just waiting for the moment that they could eat the boy’s brains! In order to dope the kids, the aliens put sleeping powder in milk and doughnuts and feed them to the gullible little brats! You guessed it, it’s up to the giant space turtle Gamera to save the kids.

This classic monster movie is right up the alley of any kid or kid at heart. I thought the movie was fun to watch despite being just a bit corny. Many people revue movies such as this one and just trash it. Most of the the revues are written by teens and young adults who are not old enough to remember seeing these movies after the Saturday afternoon wrestling matches on the low power UHF station in their area. So they have no understanding of the nostalgia these movies have for those of us that watched them as kids. I watched the movie with my two kids and we laughed and really had fun. That's the point of these movies. This movie is available on the set called "Alien Worlds" and is available from Mills Creek Entertainment.
